Apple Watch Series 5 review: A smartwatch close to perfection

The Apple Watch Series 5 is close to perfection, as good as smartwatches can get today. It does everything from receive notifications to monitoring your heart rate without a hitch, has a design that's becoming timeless, and a feature list that's so...

Stylish design ; Comprehensive fitness features ; Health features are genuinely helpful ; Useful always-on display ; Cellular model can replace your phone for a short time

Even with small changes, the Apple Watch Series 5 remains the best smartwatch

Always-on is great, but battery life needs improvement.

Always-on is great, but battery life needs improvement.

The Apple Watch Series 5 adds an always-on display, so it can show the time all the time. An added compass aids navigation and improves elevation readings. Cellular models gain an international SOS mode.

Battery life remains a day and a half at best. No new health features, and the watch lacks native sleep tracking. Needs an iPhone to set up and work. Offers only Apple's growing but limited selection of watch faces.

Apple's subtly improved watch adds a key overdue feature and improved software with this update, but it remains largely the same great smartwatch as last year.

Apple Watch Series 5

The Apple Watch Series 5 doesn't feature any drastic changes, but an always-on display makes the best smartwatch you can buy even better.

Always-on display. Excellent fitness tracking and heart rate monitoring accuracy. WatchOS 6 brings useful new apps. Smooth performance.

Expensive. No built-in sleep tracking. Battery life remains the same.

Bottom Line: The Apple Watch Series 5 doesn't feature any drastic changes, but an always-on display makes the best smartwatch you can buy even better.

Apple Watch Series 5 review: the best smartwatch cements its place at the top

With a new always-on screen and new outdoors-friendly features, the Apple Watch's momentum continues

Excellent design (and new titanium finish) ; Fantastic health features, including ECG ; Good, comprehensive fitness options ; 32GB of on-board storage ; Always-on screen is lovely…

…but does reduce battery life compared to Series 4 ; Doesn't work with Android at all, still

Apple Watch Series 5 review

You were always-on my mind

Always-on, baby ; Battery life is still good enough ; Noise-monitoring, period-tracking and better Siri among the watchOS 6 improvements ; It’s an Apple Watch - they’re really good

S4 lasted longer between charges ; New App Store not great ; Still no third-party watch faces

A minor upgrade, but an always-on display makes the best smartwatch even better

Apple Watch Series 5 review: Still the best smartwatch in town

The fifth-gen Watch features an always-on display and a digital compass - but is that enough to make you want to upgrade or dip in for the first time?

Always-on display ; Compass ; Heart-rate monitoring ; Bands still fit from previous versions ; Two sizes

Not much of an upgrade from Series 4 ; No sleep tracking ; No international roaming

Still the smartwatch to beat, although the fifth-gen model is taking things a little bit easy in terms of new innovations and features - really the S5 is an S4 with always-on display and built-in compass.

Apple Watch Series 5 (2019) review

Even if you're an Android user, this is still the smartwatch experience to beat.

Immaculate design ; Rich software ; Always-on display

No sleep tracking ; Still no ECG in Australia ; Premium price-tag

Apple Watch Series 5 Review: Always-on makes all the difference

When it comes to smartwatches, there's the Apple Watch and then there's everything else. Five generations of wearable have seen Cupertino's timepiece lose most of its rough edges; now, the Apple Watch Series 5 is taking one of the last big usability...

Always-on display doesn't impact battery life ; watchOS 6 brings App Store and more to the wrist ; Display looks great ; Still the smartwatch to beat

Still no third-party watch faces ; Standalone features still aren't quite divorced from iPhone ; Battery life has stayed the same

Apple Watch Series 4 vs Apple Watch Series 5: Which smartwatch should you buy?

We weigh up the design, features and specs so you know which of the latest Apple Watch Series is best for you

The only caveat to this is that Apple has now slashed the price of its Watch 3 to just £200. Although it’s not mentioned in this comparison and omits even more features compared to the Watch 4, the older device is well worth considering if you’re on a...

Apple Watch Series 5: Now with an always-on display

The new Apple Watch 5 offers the same 18-hour battery life of its predecessor, despite packing an always-on screen

It's quite possible that the answer to that question is yes, but if you’ve always found Apple’s wearable pricing prohibitively expensive, then this final announcement is the one worth getting excited about.
